Homemade Chicken Broth

Making your own homemade chicken broth is a great way to add flavor and nutrition to your favorite dishes. The best part is that it’s easy to make and doesn’t take much time. Here’s how to make a delicious and nutritious chicken broth with just a few simple ingredients.

  • 1 whole chicken, giblets removed
  • 4 quarts of cold water
  • 2 carrots, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 bay leaves

Put the chicken into a large stockpot or Dutch oven and add the cold water. Bring the water to a boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low and simmer for one hour. Skim off any foam that rises to the top during this time.

Add the carrots, celery, onion, garlic, pepper and bay leaves. Simmer for an additional 60 minutes. Skim off any foam that rises during this time.

Strain the broth through a colander or sieve into another pot. Discard the solids and let the broth cool before storing in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to four days or in the freezer for up to three months.
